Unlocking the Secret to the Perfect Mix Ratio
If you’ve read our guide to understanding mix ratios (if you missed it then you can catch up by clicking here) then you’ll want to check out this post about how to unlock the secret of the perfect mix ratio.
Achieving the correct mix ratio may seem straightforward, but it’s important to take the necessary steps to ensure precision. Here are some tips to help:
1. Check Manufacturer Instructions
Always refer to the specific instructions provided by us here at Compset. Different systems of epoxy may require different ratios of resin to hardener, so it’s crucial to read the guidelines for each product you use.
2. Use a Digital Scale
To ensure accuracy, use a digital scale when mixing your epoxy. Measuring by weight is typically more accurate than measuring by volume, especially when working with products that have different densities. A scale will help you measure the exact amount of resin and hardener required for your mix ratio.
3. Use Proper Mixing Containers
Use clean, dry mixing containers to prevent contamination. Plastic or silicone containers are typically preferred, as they are easy to clean and won’t react with the epoxy. Be sure to use containers that are large enough to allow for proper mixing without spilling.
4. Mix Thoroughly
Once you've measured the correct amounts of resin and hardener, thoroughly mix the two components together. Stir for at least 3-5 minutes, making sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the container to incorporate all of the material. Incomplete mixing can result in curing issues, as the resin and hardener may not be evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
5. Work Within the Pot Life
Epoxy has a limited "pot life" – the amount of time the mixture remains workable before it starts to cure. The pot life is influenced by the mix ratio, ambient temperature, and hardener used. Make sure to apply the epoxy within the recommended time frame to avoid it curing prematurely in the mixing container.
